At Henry Medical Center, we provide a broad range of outpatient and inpatient surgeries while optimizing easy access to care, convenience, and shortened hospital stays. Staying on the cutting edge of technologies in conjunction with personalized service provides our patients and families with the attention, care and consideration they so much deserve.

Our qualified surgeons perform sophisticated surgical procedures that utilize today's newest evolving technology. From minimally invasive endoscopic surgeries to advanced orthopedic procedures, the department performs a wide variety of specialized surgical procedures that meet the healthcare needs of the community while providing a positive, caring and unique health care experience.

Henry Medical Center has an Ambulatory (one-day) Surgery Center on site for those procedures not requiring an extended stay. More than 80 percent of all surgeries at HMC are outpatient surgeries. Outpatient surgery is certainly more common in today's health care environment, enabling the patient to recover within the comforts of his/her own home. Rest assured, however, that no one who should stay the night will be sent home. HMC is focused on the safety and well being of our patients, and each person will be treated as an individual.

We will make every effort to make sure that your Same Day Surgery experience is as comfortable as possible. Following is some frequently asked questions concerning surgery.

What happens in pre-op?
After checking into the Admissions Office, you will be sent to the Ambulatory Care Unit. A registered nurse will perform your assessment. He/She will take a history and do a nursing physical assessment. You will change clothes and prepare for surgery. There may be blood work or x-rays performed if your doctor has ordered it. A board-certified anesthesiologist will discuss your anesthetic options for surgery. Then you will wait with your family until it is time to go to surgery.

What can I do with my belongings?
Your family may take your belongings or you may leave them in a secure location within the unit.

Do I have to have an IV?
Generally yes, if your doctor has ordered it.

What happens when it is time for surgery?
You will be taken to the operating room by a registered nurse. Your care in the operating room will be provided by a team of qualified individuals. Your family will wait in the outpatient waiting room.

What happens after surgery?
Depending on the type of anesthetic you receive, most patients are taken to post anesthesia care unit for recovery by a registered nurse. After approximately one hour when you are stable and your pain is under control you will be taken back to the Ambulatory Care Unit to wait with your family until you are ready for discharge. Some patients may be taken back to the ACU immediately after surgery.

When can I go home?
The nurses will assess your condition and communicate with your physician. When your pain is under control and you are comfortable most patients are able to return home. You and your family will receive specific discharge instructions for your home care before you leave the hospital.

What if I have questions?
The registered nurse is available and will be able to answer any questions you have during your entire hospital visit.
