May is National Stroke Awareness Month and Henry Medical Center is offering free blood pressure screenings and stroke risk assessments at the Wal-Mart in McDonough on May 8, 15 and 22 from 1 P.M. – 5 P.M.

High blood pressure affects one in three adults.  Left untreated, it can not only lead to stroke, it is the number one cause of stroke.  According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the leading cause of adult disability.  The good news is 80% of all strokes are preventable that’s why it’s so important to know your risk.

Anyone can have a stroke.  However, your chances increase if you are over age 55, male, of African-American, Hispanic or Asian/Pacific Islander decent, or have a family history of stroke.  Other stroke risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, diet and exercise are controllable.

Symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding, feeling dizzy or loss of balance, trouble seeing and sudden severe headache with no known cause.
For more information on Henry Medical Centers blood pressure screening and stroke assessment, please call the Community Education Department at
