Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are two kinds of inflammatory bowel diseas (IBD). People with IBD often have some of these symptoms: diarrhea, fever, weight loss, vomiting, and sometimes bleeding. Crohn's disease often causes patches of inflammation around the small and large intestines. Whereas, Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation in the colon (large intenstines) only. Despite these differences, the diet is the same.

During and Attack
- Reduce diet to clear liquids
- Once Diarrhea starts to go away, ease back into solid foods
- Slowly add dairy foods and high fiber foods (whole grains) last
- Limit Fat
- Eat several small meals
- Consider nutrition supplemental drink: Boost, Ensure, Choice, Glucerna
- Notify your doctor if symptoms continue longer than 72 hours or if bleeding occus
After an attack
- Increase solid foods slowly
- Keep a log of the foods that cause diarrhea
- If you note a pattern of dirrhea, stop eating that food
- Decrease amount of cakes, pies, and cookies
- Increase Fruits and Vegetables (5-9 servings each day)
- Increase Fiber: legumes, whole grains, whole fruits and vegetables. (25-30 grams per day)
